The Weeknd - In The Night

All alone she was living
In a world without an end or beginning
Babygirl was living life for the feeling
But I don't mind, I don't mind
And all the wrongs she committed
She was numb and she was so co-dependent
She was young and all she had was the city
But I don't mind, I don't mind

And I know that she's capable of anything, it's riveting
But when you wake up she's always gone, gone, gone

In the night she hears them calling
In the night she's dancing to relieve the pain
She'll never walk away (I don't think you understand)
In the night when she comes crawling
Dollar bills and tears keep falling down her face
She'll never walk away (I don't think you understand)

He sang a song when he did it
He was cold and he was so unforgiving
Now she dances to the song on the minute
Yeah, all the time, all the time
It made her weak when she hear it
And it got her on her knees like religion
She was young and she was forced to be a woman
Yeah, all the time, all the time

And I know that she's capable of anything, it's riveting
But when you wake up she's always gone, gone, gone

In the night she hears them calling
In the night she's dancing to relieve the pain
She'll never walk away (I don't think you understand)
In the night when she comes crawling
Dollar bills and tears keep falling down her face
She'll never walk away (I don't think you understand)

I don't think you understand...

In the night she hears them calling
In the night she's dancing to relieve the pain
She'll never walk away (I don't think you understand)
In the night when she comes crawling
Dollar bills and tears keep falling down her face
She'll never walk away (I don't think you understand)

Though upbeat in tempo, “In the Night” explores dark themes following a survivor of childhood sexual abuse, similar to the “horror stories” told on The Weeknd’s debut studio album, Kiss Land. The New York Times describes “In the Night” as the album’s most electric moment. The song is reminiscent of Marilyn Monroe’s survival story – American actress and model was sexually abused as a child and often spoke out about it in the media. Interestingly, Marilyn Monroe was able to use her sexuality as a source of healing, becoming known as “America’s Most Famous Sex Symbol.” In an interview with GQ, The Weeknd speaks about this inspiration: "Max’s studio used to be Marilyn Monroe’s old house and I came up with the concept for a song called “In the Night” in her bedroom. That was pretty amazing. Unfortunately I couldn’t help but imagine Joe DiMaggio’s sperm everywhere on the floor." The Weeknd also revealed further inspiration to the The New York Times, stating the song was made in homage to Michael Jackson. When first played for music publisher, Ron Perry, screamed with excitement: "It’s ‘Billie Jean’! It’s ‘Billie [expletive] Jean’!"
