Ruel - courage

[Verse 1]
Wet paper on my doorstep, rainin' all night
It's okay, I don't wanna read it anyway
Turn the TV just to hear the voices talkin', maybe

[Pre-Chorus]
Sofa's so uncomfortable
When I jam the door and leave it open
But I've been thinkin'

[Chorus]
If I try again, I know I'd run
Droppin' the words to the back of my tongue
Poisonous is what I've become
I'd try again, but I don't have the courage (Courage)

[Verse 2]
Facin' the sun from the rooftop playin' a sad song
Feelin' bad for myself
All of my friends back home say I should be happy, maybe

[Pre-Chorus]
Sofa's so uncomfortable
When I jam the door and leave it open
But I been thinkin'
[Chorus]
If I try again, I know I'd run
Droppin' the words to the back of my tongue
Poisonous is what I've become
I'd try again, but I don't have the courage, oh (Courage)

[Post-Chorus]
Oh, oh (Courage)

[Bridge]
It hurts so good, bad nights feel the same as they did then
I wish someone had told me how it ends
I'm not so good at tryin' my words, in my defense
I wish someone had told me, told me

[Chorus]
If I try again, I know I'd run
Droppin' the words to the back of my tongue
Poisonous is what I've become
I'd try again, but I don't have the courage (Courage, yeah; courage)

[Outro]
Oh, I'm poisonous
(Courage)
If I try again
If I try again
Oh, no (Courage)
Yeah
(Courage)

"courage" was written by Ruel (with Sarah Aarons and M-Phazes) in Paris, 2019. In an interview with Thomas Bleach, when asked about the creative process of ‘courage’ he stated: “I was basically writing a song about how if I could do my life over then I wouldn’t do the same”, because he doesn’t feel that he has enough courage to continue the path he is on. The song also talks about how he wishes he could go back and do his life differently. ‘courage’ has heavy gospel influence and is Ruel’s most soul-sounding song. "The concept wasn’t necessarily true at all. I didn’t really feel like I related to it. But it just felt like something people should hear anyway. […] I was home alone a lot in LA, because most of my writing sessions were getting cancelled. I was listening to a lot of really sad music, thinking, “What am I even doing? Why do I have a music career?” I felt a bit useless. The chorus is about: “If I could try, I’d run away.” It’s pretty sad! Luckily, I don’t actually feel like that. When I’m songwriting, I like to expand the biggest emotion. And that’s the most intense emotion, when I’m sad. So I just nail in on that." – Ruel via NME
