Conan Gray - Summer Child

[Verse 1]
You see all the flowers in the weeds
You're scared of the dark when you sleep
You cover up your arms with your sleeves
Even in hundred degree heat
Your father was awfully mean
Your favorite color is green
It reminds you of the summer you turned three
Runnin' through sprinklers on your street

[Pre-Chorus]
And you laugh and you dance in the wind
And you sway and you hug and you kiss
But there's darkness behind those eyes
Even when you smile

[Chorus]
Oh, summer child
You don't have to act like all you feel is mild
You don't really love the Sun, it drives you wild
You're lyin', summer child

[Verse 2]
Arеn't you way too busy takin' care of everybody
To takе care of yourself?
When the Sun goes missing, aren't the flowers just as pretty?
Aren't the oceans just as deep?
The trees as green? And as for me
I'll watch you weep

Oh, summer child
You don't have to act like all you feel is mild
You don't really love the Sun, it drives you wild
You're lyin', summer child

“Summer Child”, the ninth track on Conan Gray’s sophomore album "Superache". The track showcases someone who can see the positives in everyone, and will give everything they have for everyone else, not leaving much for themselves. In this ballad, Conan tells the character that it’s okay to cry, and they don’t have to be optimistic all the time. It’s okay to take time for yourself. When diving more in-depth onto the meaning of this song, Conan told Apple Music that this song is about the fact that we all have a tendency to create versions of ourselves that we think are easier for people to digest. But oftentimes, it’s just something that we’ve made up in our heads. The character could be Conan’s younger self. In his old YouTube videos, the singer cultivated a colorful, happy aesthetic and might have tried to be that bubbly person in real life and push away the negative feelings and his family trauma until more recently. "My generation is the type of generation that loves to just act like everything is perfectly fine. When we talk about pain, we are very sarcastic about it. We don’t really get into depth about it, and we laugh it off. We create these facades about who we are in order to make things a bit easier. ‘Summer Child’ is me acknowledging the fact that we all have a tendency to create versions of ourselves that we think are easier for people to digest. But oftentimes, it’s just something that we’ve made up in our heads and everyone is perfectly lovable the way that they are." — Via Apple Music
