Poison & Wine - The Civil Wars

Poison & Wine

Barton Hollow
folk acoustic indie epic singer-songwriter

The Poison & Wine Songfacts reports that this is the only song on Barton Hollow that Joy Williams and John Paul White wrote with an outside collaborator - their friend Nashville songwriter Chris Lindsey. ‘Poison & Wine’ is a musical snapshot about the dichotomy of love - that while it can be the thing that destroys you, it can also be the very same thing that beckons and builds you. JP and I are both married – have been for several years now - and we got to talking one day about what a tug and pull our individual relationships can be. The longer you know someone - and the longer you allow someone to know you - the more the light and shadows inside each person become more vivid. This song was our attempt at being as brutally honest about the dangerous and beautiful process of knowing and being known. - Joy Williams

The Civil Wars were an American musical duo composed of singer-songwriters Joy Williams and John Paul White. After releasing a live-performance album and a four-song EP, their full-length album Barton Hollow was released in 2011. The band won the Grammy Award for Best Country Duo/Group Performance and Best Folk Album in 2012. Williams and White met in 2008, during a song-writing session or "writing camp" at a music studio in Nashville, Tennessee. Show more ...

Poison & Wine - The Civil Wars

You only know what I want you to
I know everything you don't want me to
Your mouth is poison, your mouth is wine
You think your dreams are the same as mine

Oh, I don't love you, but I always will
Oh, I don't love you, but I always will
I don't love you but I always will
I always will

I wish you'd hold me when I turn my back
The less I give, the more I get back
Oh, your hands can heal, your hands can bruise
I don't have a choice but I still choose you

Oh, I don't love you, but I always will
Oh, I don't love you, but I always will
I don't love you, but I always will
Oh, I don't love you, but I always will
I don't love you, but I always will
I don't love you, but I always will
I don't love you, but I always will
I always will

I always will
I always will
I always will
I always will
