Calling Elvis

rock classic rock dire straits 80s guitar

"Calling Elvis" is a song written by Mark Knopfler. It first appeared on the final studio album by the band, On Every Street (1991), and was released as the first single from that album, peaking at number 21 in the United Kingdom. It also appears on the 1993 live album On the Night. The music video was directed by Gerry Anderson of Thunderbirds fame and includes several members of the band represented in marionette form. The song is about an Elvis fan who believes Elvis Presley still to be alive, making references to many of his songs, including Heartbreak Hotel, Love Me Tender, Don't Be Cruel and Return to Sender, and the popular expression Elvis has left the building.

Dire Straits were a British rock band from Newcastle, United Kingdom, formed in 1977 by Mark Knopfler (guitar and vocals), his brother David Knopfler (guitar), John Illsley (bass), and Pick Withers (drums), and subsequently managed by Ed Bicknell. The band were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2018. Dire Straits emerged during the post-punk era of the late '70s, and while their sound was minimalistic and stripped down, they owed little to punk. Show more ...

Calling Elvis - Dire Straits

Calling elvis - is anybody home
Calling elvis - I'm here all alone
Did he leave the building
Or can he come to the phone
Calling elvis - I'm here all alone

Well tell him I was calling just to wish him well
Let me leave my number - heartbreak hotel
Oh love me tender - baby dob't be cruel
Return to sender - treat me like a fool

Calling elvis - is anybody home
Calling elvis - I'm here all alone
Did he leave the building
Or can he come to the phone
Calling elvis - I'm here all alone

Why don't you go get him - I'm his biggest fan
You gotta tell him - he's still the man
Long distance baby - so far from home
Don't you think maybe you could put him on

Well tell him I was calling just to wish him well
Let me leave my number - heartbreak hotel
Oh love me tender - baby dob't be cruel
Return to sender - treat me like a fool

Calling elvis - is anybody home
Calling elvis - I'm here all alone
Did he leave the building
Or can he come to the phone
Calling elvis - I'm here all alone
