Violet Hill - Coldplay

Violet Hill

Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends
rock Coldplay alternative britpop british

"Violet Hill" is the first single from Coldplay's fourth studio album Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends, released 6 May 2008. Chris Martin described the song as having a "chalky, pastel feeling" which he said reminds him of his childhood. "Imagine a pseudo guitar-like circus music with a pinch of Chicago... It's something new from us and you will be impressed." The song is the first anti-war protest song from the band, and borrows its rhythm from the Beatles; Violet Hill is a street near Abbey Road. Martin told Rolling Stone that lyrics about a fox becoming a god and a "carnival of idiots on show" were a commentary on Fox News. Chris, Jonny, Guy & Will scored their 9th UK top ten hit in May 2008 with the Brian Eno produced 'Violet Hill'. Not long after, in mid-June, their latest album 'Viva La Vida' shot straight to No.1 on both sides of the Atlantic and downloads of the title track gave them their first chart-topping single here in Britain.

Violet Hill - Coldplay

Was a long and dark December
From the rooftops I remember
There was snow
White snow

Clearly I remember
From the windows they were watching
While we froze down below

When the future's architectured
By a carnival of idiots on show
You'd better lie low

If you love me
Won't you let me know?

Was a long and dark December
When the banks became cathedrals
And the fog
Became God

Priests clutched onto bibles
And went out to fit their rifles
And the cross was held aloft

Bury me in honor
When I'm dead and hit the ground
A love back home unfolds

If you love me
Won't you let me know?

I don't want to be a soldier
With the captain of some sinking ship
With snow, far below

So if you love me
Why'd you let me go?

I took my love down to violet hill
There we sat in snow
All that time she was silent still

So if you love me
Won't you let me know?

If you love me,
Won't you let me know?
