We Exist - Arcade Fire

We Exist

Reflektor
indie rock rock indie Canadian alternative

The second track on Reflektor deals with a young man coming to terms with his homosexuality. There’s a song on “Reflektor” called “We Exist”, which is about a gay kid talking to his dad [“Daddy, it’s true, I’m different from you. But tell me why they treat me like this?”]. In dominant cultures there’s what’s normal, and everything else is abnormal. It’s one of the darker tendencies of humanity to think everyone should fit into a mould. -Win Butler, Time Out Magazine This song is an example that Reflektor’s most straightforward pop songs are fractured and haunted, reminiscent of the way Achtung Baby summoned the ghosts that had always been dormant in U2. When people talk about James Murphy’s production on Reflektor, the Brian Eno comparisons will be obvious, unavoidable, and earned. The music video tells the story of a pre-op transwoman. Finally summoning the courage to visit a bar, she is attacked. The realism of the video then disappears; there is a very camp dance sequence, and she is shown performing with the band (footage taken from their Lollapalooza performance in 2014).

We Exist - Arcade Fire

Walking around
Head full of sound
Acting like
We don't exist

Walk in a room
Stare after you
Talking like
We don't exist

But we exist

Doubt it's true
I'm different from you
But tell me why they treat me like this?

You turned away
What would I say
You're not the first to [?] a kiss.

[Chorus:]
Maybe it's true
They're staring at you
As you walk in a room
Tell them it's fine
Stare if you like
Just let me through
Just let us through

Na na na na na na na.
Na na na na na na na

Down on my knees
Begging us please
Praying that we don't exist

Doubting is fine
I'm used to them now
But tell me why they treat me like this?

Is it because I do it like this?

[Chorus:]

Let them stare! Let them stare!
That's all they can do!
But it's not fair!
[?]

[?]
Never looked so scared
Will you watch us now?

[?]

You know we're breaking through
But will you watch us [?]?
What are you so afraid to lose?

Down on my knees
Begging us please
Praying that we don't exist

Down on my knees
Begging us please
Praying that we don't exist

But we exist!
We exist!

Down on my knees
Begging us please
Praying that we don't exist

Down on my knees
Begging us please
Praying that we don't exist

But we exist!
We exist!

Na na na na na na.
Na na na na na na.
Na na na na na na.
Na na na na na na
